It’s official. A head count of Hospicio staff and doctors have revealed that as many as 25 nurses, three doctors, six servants and five security guards fell prey to dengue since the disease raised its ugly head in the government-run hospital a fortnight ago.
Hospicio Medical Superintendent, Dr Ira Almeida had apparently ordered a head count of the number of hospital doctors, nurses, servants and security guards since there were conflicting reports of the number of dengue cases reported in the government-run hospital.
Of the 25 nurses, who fell victims to dengue, as many as 10 of them have resumed duties after a short break. The remaining 15 nurses, sources said are still undergoing dengue treatment at home or in hospital.
To tide over the shortage of nurses, the Hospicio authorities have got a couple of nurses from the TB hospital at the hospital. Dr Ira, however, said the existing nurses have managed the situation in the absence of a sizeable number of nurses. “We expect the situation to return to normal once the 15 nurses return to duties soon,” Dr Ira said, adding that it’s days since most of the nurses had fallen prey to dengue, only a lone nurse was affected by dengue last Sunday.
As far as the doctors are concerned, it is learnt that as many as three doctors were being treated for suspected dengue, while reports have come confirming that one of the doctors had dengue.
Servants and security guards too had to bear the brunt of dengue at Hospicio. The head count ordered by the Hospicio management revealed that as many as six servants and five security guards had fallen victims to dengue.
With the growth of vegetation, bushes and potential breeding sites at Hospicio has been cited as the factors offering conducive environment, and Margao Urban Health Centre repeatedly reminding Hospicio authorities to clean up the premises, the hospital premises is being cleared of the messy situation.
The thick growth of vegetation adjoining the corridor overlooking the OT has been finally cleared by the hospital authorities, with Hospicio Medical Superintendent Dr Ira saying the hospital has laid thrust on the clean up of the premises on priority basis.
17 dengue patients undergoing treatment at city-based nursing home
MARGAO: A city-based nursing home is believed to be playing host to as many as 17 dengue patients, with sources saying that a doctor attached to the hospital, has also fallen prey to the disease.
Sources in the know informed that most of the hospital rooms are being occupied by the dengue patients. It is still unclear whether the doctor got the dengue in the nursing home or at her place of residence.
Sources informed that if Hospicio was playing host to a large number of dengue patients over a week ago, city-based private hospitals and nursing homes are believed to have received dozens of patients from the city and outside with the city witnessing a dengue outbreak.
Margao health centre to undertake fogging ops across city
MARGAO: The Margao Urban Health Centre has decided to undertake fogging and anti-larvae operations across the city during the weekend, with dengue cases showing no signs of abating.
Margao Urban Health Centre, Dr Anju Kharangate told The Goan that while the total number of dengue cases reported in the city up to October 16 was pegged at 206, another 15-16 fresh cases have been reported in the city in the last two days. “The rains in the last three days have further compounded the problem in the battle against dengue. We, however, are optimistic that the situation will turn normal in the coming days,” she said.
Health officials are now pinning their hopes on the meeting called by the district Magistrate next week to ensure coordination amongst the various agencies to take the battle against dengue to its logical conclusion. Though the Margao health officials were expecting the district authorities to hold the meeting this week, they now anxiously wait for the meeting scheduled next week, hoping that it will spur agencies, such as the Margao Municipal Council, Water Resources Department, and the PWD, Sewerage to take necessary action.
