The body of a 25-year-old hotel employee from Manipur, who was swept away by strong waves while allegedly attempting to click a selfie at Anjuna beach, was recovered on Wednesday, bringing to an end an intensive search operation that lasted over a day.
The deceased has been identified as Yapan Sharon, who was employed at a hotel in North Goa.
Sharon had gone to Anjuna beach with friends on Tuesday evening when the incident occurred.
According to police, he reportedly lost his balance while attempting to take a selfie on the rocky shoreline and was dragged into the sea by powerful waves.
Local residents, lifeguards and emergency personnel launched a search operation soon after the incident.
However, rough sea conditions and strong currents hampered rescue efforts, forcing the search to continue through the night and into the following day.
His body was eventually recovered off the Anjuna coast on Wednesday and shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital for medico-legal formalities before being handed over to his family.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are conducting further inquiries.
