MAPUSA: Two accused in the murder of a 41-year-old hotel and pub owner at Candolim were bought back to Goa on Wednesday and were remanded to eight days in police custody by the Mapusa JMFC.
The two accused, Umesh Rathod Lamani (24) of Gadag-Karnataka and Dayashankar Sahu (23) of Madhya Pradesh had allegedly stabbed Vishwajeet Singh with swords in the parking lot of an apartment at Bamonwaddo-Candolim in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Revealing further details regarding the crime, Calangute Police said both accused had left for Mapusa shortly after fleeing from the murder site.
They then left for Belgaum by hitching a lift from a goods carrier truck and on reaching Belgaum, travelled by bus to Gadag, the native place of Rathod.
Suspecting that the police may trace them in Gadag, the two accused had planned to flee to Madhya Pradesh, the native place of Sahu.
Their escape plans were, however, foiled by the swift action of Goa Police, who immediately got in touch with the Gadag police and had them nabbed as soon as both accused reached Gadag.
Police said Rathod was working as a tourist guide in the pub owned by Singh. Rathod had allegedly stolen a motorcycle belonging to Singh and had fled away. Singh had filed a police complaint against Rathod and police suspect that the accused had plotted revenge against Singh over the police complaint.
Police said Rathod sought the help of his friend, Sahu, who was employed as a security guard at a hotel in Calangute, to eliminate Singh.
Shahu had some swords in his possession and both accused went to Singh's apartment at Candolim. As Singh returned to his home from work, both the accused ambushed him while climbing the stairs and stabbed him with swords.
A police team led by Mapusa PI Tushar Lotlikar went to Gadag to take custody of the accused on Tuesday and handed them over to Calangute police in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Both the accused was presented before the JMFC Mapusa and were remanded to eight days in police custody.
Following an autopsy, police handed over Singh's body to family members.
Meanwhile, Singh along with his brother, Abhijit, had been in Goa since the last seven years and were operating hotels in Candolim, Calangute and Anjuna.
