With an appeal to Goans not to exploit the seasonal mushrooms to prevent them from extinction, Professor Nandakumar Kamat said that preserving the environment and its biodiversity is important to live a healthy life in the future generations of the human being.
While speaking in an online programme on the occasion of the world the biodiversity day organised by Goa Biodiversity Board Nandakumar Kamat said that there in need of documentation on micro-organisms and their uses in our day-to-day life.
Kamat said that now we have the Covid pandemic. In the future, more such pandemics may occur and the solution to such pandemics is only in biodiversity. The theme of this year's biodiversity celebration programme was 'Solutions on the problem is hidden in nature itself'.
Kamat said that Goans like to eat seasonal mushroom which is found in jungles during monsoon season. These mushrooms are plucked in large quantities and eaten. If we don't stop this exploitation then we may find one more pandemic emerging from western ghats.
Kamat explained how the biodiversity in nature keeps checks and balances on the disease-causing microbes. He said that humans should not interfere in nature and if he does he has to face consequences.
