Human Rights Commission seeks PWD report on water shortage

PANAJI

Taking suo motu cognisance of erratic water supply in parts of Goa, the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has sought the presence of the Principal Chief Engineer (PCE) of Public Works Department (PWD) during the hearing along with a report on March 11.

The Commission, consisting of Acting Chairperson Desmond D’Costa and Member Pramod Kamat, referred to news reports highlighting the plight of the people in places such as Chapora, Assagaon, Anjuna, Majorda, and other places due to irregular water supply. The Undersecretary was subsequently directed to issue a notice to the PCE PWD.

“Taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, the Commission directs (Commission’s Under Secretary) to issue a notice to the PCE PWD, Altinho, Panaji, to submit a report and to remain present for the hearing on March 11 at 10:30 am,” reads the notice.

Quite a few places across both the districts have been suffering from irregular water supply, with residents alleging that repeated petitions to the PWD to resolve the issue have been falling on deaf ears.

On Tuesday, the residents of Bandirwada-Chapora and Baddem marched to the PWD office and confronted officials after facing water shortage for the past one month.
