The locals have expressed shock over the desecration of idol installed outside Shree Sateri Devasthan at Curchorem by unknown miscreants allegedly on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, February 9.
The situation left the devotees worried, and the atmosphere remained tense in the locality for some time.
The miscreants damaged the idol of Saraswati, which was installed at the entrance of the temple.
The devotees learned of the incident in the early morning hours after the priest saw the damaged idol at the entrance to the temple.
Immediately after being informed of the incident, Curchorem police rushed to the site and started the investigation, also capturing video recordings from nearby shops and residential houses.
Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral also visited the temple premises and directed the police authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and nab the culprits at the earliest.
Cabral, however, lamented the non-functioning CCTV cameras in the town area, which were installed by the government a few years back.
Cabral informed that although the CCTV cameras were installed to aid the police in the investigation process, their non-functioning has put the police in a tight spot, as they have to depend on private CCTV camera recordings from shops and other business establishments. Cabral assured the locals of getting the CCTVs functional again by bringing the matter to the notice of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to allocate grants for the repairs and installation of new CCTVs.
Meanwhile, the locals informed that a similar incident had taken place in the locality some fifteen years ago, and there had been no signs of such incidents in the locality since then. After a gap of fifteen years, a repeat incident has taken place, informed locals, and they urged the police to nab the culprits at the earliest.
