The illegal extensions of four Deen Dayal kiosks outside the GMC medical complex were dismantled on Friday after an order to this effect was passed by the North Goa Deputy Collector.
The exercise started in the morning with the PWD’s demolition squad working on the dismantling and was completed by afternoon.
Santa Cruz Deputy Sarpanch Domnic Pereira, who is one of the complainants, informed that the demolition notice was served to the four Deen Dayal kiosk owners based on which the drive has been undertaken.
A large number of police personnel were stationed at the site to maintain law and order. Officials from the Collectorate, the PWD and other departments were also present.
Meanwhile, differences arose between St Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes and the Santa Cruz panchayat over allowing the fruits and vegetable vendors sit outside due to lack of business.
Though MLA Fernandes favoured that they be allowed to do business outside till an alternative is worked out, Santa Cruz deputy Sarpanch said the panchayat won’t allow anyone to sit outside.
“The fruits and vegetable vendors are not getting business due to which their produce is getting spoilt. Therefore, till an alternate solution is worked out, they should be allowed to do business outside,” MLA Fernandes said.
But Dy Sarpanch Pereira differed saying, “The panchayat won’t allow anybody to do business outside. We are going to go as per law. If the MLA has the powers to let the fruits and vegetable vendors sit outside, then let him get the necessary directions from the authorities concerned.”
Pereira further said that he will seek an appointment with CM Pramod Sawant and bring to his notice the illegalities done by the vendors despite the government spending over Rs 2.5 crore public money on the rehabilitation project.
