Officials of the Department of Mining and Geology, Captain of Ports along with police raided an illegal sand extraction site in Oxel-Siolim and seized 232 cubic metres of sand and attached five canoes early Wednesday morning.
According to reports, around 35 to 40 canoes were allegedly used to carry out illegal sand extraction at the Oxel jetty.
Sources said the labourers on the canoes took to their heels after seeing the raiding party at the site.
Officials of Captain of Ports, Sudhir Mandrekar of the mines department and Krishna Gauns, joint mamlatdar conducted the raid.
The seized canoes were later handed over to the Captain of Ports department.
The department had received several complaints from locals about illegal sand extraction in the area.
