The Margao Municipal Council on Saturday cracked a whip against illegal vendors doing business outside the wholesale fish market and along the road leading to the market.
Chairperson Lyndon Pereira and Ward Councillor Francis Joanes also seen at the market to take stock of the situation in the wake of complaints that illegal hawkers swarm around the old market area right up to the wholesale fish market.
The MMC workers removed the fish vendors doing illegal business on the road outside the wholesale fish market.
“We are in receipt of complaints that fish vendors are squatting along the entire wholesale fish market road. The vendors are supposed to sell fish inside the wholesale fish market and not outside. They have been doing unauthorized business, especially outside the main gate of the wholesale fish market”, the MMC Chairperson added.
The municipal Chairperson pointed out that strict instructions have been issued to the workers to deal firmly with the illegal hawkers.
The MMC workers also seized materials from vendors who were doing business on vehicles.

Beggars too face the music
MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council workers on Saturday removed beggars squatting around the old market-SGDPA area.
Both Chairperson Lyndon Pereira and councillor Francis Joanes were personally seen telling the beggars to leave the area before they are rounded up by the police.
Chairperson Pereira told the media that he will discuss the issue of beggars and begging with the South Goa District Collector to put an end to the nuisance.
“In the past, the MMC had taken the beggars off the street from the old market area with the help of the police, but they returned to the same spot after some days,” he said.
