The weather bureau on Wednesday issued a ‘yellow alert’ predicting thundershowers with lightning at isolated areas in Goa for the next two days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall activity will take place over a few places in Goa which will be accompanied with thunder and lightning.
The IMD has said the rainfall activity is expected to continue up till October 23.
“The increase in rainfall activity is on account of monsoon trough and a well-marked low pressure area lying over central Bay of Bengal,” said Rahul Mohan, senior scientist at the IMD.
“In next two days the system over Bay of Bengal will move from North to North-East and the influence of the trough is also expected to reduce. This will lead to reduced rainfall activity from October 23,” he added.
The IMD has informed that almost all stations in Goa reported rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Valpoi receiving the highest at 1.88 inches, Canacona reported 0.76 inches and Panaji received 0.23 inches of rain.
According to the IMD data, between 5 mm and 10.8 mm rainfall was received between Tuesday and Wednesday across Goa.
Majority of Goa received heavy rainfall on Wednesday. The heavy rainfall and dark and cloudy skies experienced in various parts of the state on Wednesday is likely to continue on Thursday and Friday. Until then, the sky will continue to remain partly cloudy with one or two spells of light rain or rain showers accompanied by lightning. IMD has also predicted the possibility of fog or mist in the morning. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31°C and 24°C respectively.
However, by Friday, the low-pressure area which has developed over the Bay of Bengal is likely to dissipate thereby clearing the skies in Goa.
