The People’s Forum of BRICS Goa, has lined up a series of events in the run up to the BRICS summit in the hope to highlight the concerns of third world countries that BRICS govts claim to represent.
Addressing the media Albertina Almeida, who led collective of activists and representatives of NGOs, said that the workshops will seek to remind BRICS nations of their original agenda which was to challenge the established order of the developed countries through the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and other developed countries.
“As the Indian Government hosts the 8th BRICS Summit in Goa from October 15-16, we will attempt to raise critical voices from the social, ecological, political and economic concerns that are often ignored at big summits such as BRICS,” Almeida said.
As part of their schedule, the People Forum of BRICS Goa will organise a total of five workshops with the first a workshop and photo poster exhibition on Goa’s Tribes and Castes organised.
The workshop will be organised by the Social Justice Action Committee which will be held at T B Cunha Hall on October 1 between 3pm to 6pm which will highlight experiences and discrimination of Goa’s tribes and castes.
Another workshop on the ‘Corporatisation of Tourism’ -- the Impacts on livelihoods, displacement and community resources, resistance towards a people’s charter for tourism which is being organised by the Centre for Responsible Tourism will take a look at the national and state level tourism policies.
“The programme which will be held on October 3 at the Caritas Holiday Home between 2:30 pm and 5pm will analyse globalisation of tourism on local economies.
Besides this, the Human Rights Law Network will organise a programme on people’s resources, livelihoods and privatisation of people’s resources on October 7 at Caritas Holiday Home from 4:30 to 7:30 while on October 12 will see two programmes on Banking for Accountability organised by the Goa Bank Employees Association from 10am to 1pm at the Caritas Holiday Home while in the evening there will be a workshop on women’s issues at 4pm by Bailancho Saad at the Instituto Menezes Bragança.
The programme will be culminated by a People’s BRICS summit which will be organised at in Goa from 13-14 October, 2016 just before the official summit at the Xavier Centre for Historical Research in Porvorim as a platform for space for groups to share analysis, struggle notes and build solidarity in quest for a more just and equitable society.
