Indian Naval chief Admiral Karambir Singh on Friday raised fears that natural calamities and rising sea levels stemming from
climate change could pose clear dangers to maritime security.
Singh, who was speaking at a conclave of officials and top brass of navies of 10 states from the Indian
ocean region, also underscored the inevitability of co-operation so as to evolve region-specific solutions.”Climate change, rising sea levels, natural calamities pose clear and present
dangers,” Singh said, while opening the deliberations at the second edition of the ‘Goa Maritime Conclave’ being held over Friday and Saturday at a hotel in Sinquerim, Candolim.
Singh further said, no single nation can achieve it alone as the vastness of the oceans makes individual capacities and resources inadequate. The forum was thought of as a maritime forum of navies in the Indian
ocean region which served as a platform to help regional dialogue for maritime security
Meanwhile, national security advisor Ajit Doval who addressed the Goa Maritime Conclave at a North Goa hotel on Friday said, the mutual co-operation in the Indian ocean region is not aimed against any country. “We would like to develop and grow in a way, where we would not only maximise our national benefits, but also become more useful to neighbours,” Doval said.
“Anything that is good for one country, is going to contribute to the
wellness of the rest. But most important is one more aspect which I would like to underline, that we are not part of any alliance...
Our co-operation is not directed against any country,” Doval said at the conclave.
Top officials of navies from 10 states located in the Indian ocean region are participating in the conclave where Doval also said, that India was deficient in many areas despite its
geographical advantage, size and track record. Disaster management and long-range identifying and tracking systems
Doval said were India’s strengths which it could share with neighbours in the Indian ocean region. He said how India can partner with all neighbouring nations in the Indian ocean region was the basic idea.
Listing India’s expertise, Doval said, that its skill at disaster management as well as a long range identification and tracking system, could be shared with other countries in the region.
