Winds of instability has come to haunt the Cuncolim Municipal Council again. In a day of hectic developments, seven members of the Council, including vice-Chairperson Shashank Desai and former Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas has tabled a no confidence motion against Chairperson Polita Carneiro.

Even as Chairperson Polita told the media that she will step down from office as she has already completed one year in office, in another development, four Councilors, including former vice-Chairperson Mario Moraes, Premdeep Desai, Succorina Coutinho and Panzy Coutinho moved a no trust motion against vice-Chairperson Shashank Desai on

Thursday.

In the no trust motion against Chairperson Polita Carneiro, the seven signatories, including Lavita Mascarenhas, Angela Luis Painginkar, Virendra Desai, Kiran Naik, Shashank Desai, Udesh Gaonkar and Ashok Fadte has said the Chairperson has not been taking them into confidence. The seven members have requested the Director of Municipal Administration to convene a special meeting of the Council to discuss the notice of no trust motion against the Chairperson.

When the media contacted Chairperson Polita Carneiro for her comments on the no trust motion tabled against her by seven out of 12 Municipal Councilors, she pointed out that she was supposed to step down from office as she has completed one year in office in April last. “As per the agreement, I was supposed to step down from office after completing one year in office. Since I have completed one year in office, I will tender my resignation”, she said.

Polita had taken over the reigns of the Cuncolim Civic body on April 26 after she was declared elected to the coveted post with the support of her seven member group.

In the meantime, four Councilors, Mario Moraes, Premdeep Desai, Succorina Coutinho and Panzy Coutinho, who claimed to be one-third of the Councilors of the Civic body, has requested the Director of Municipal Administration to call a special meeting to consider the no trust motion against vice-Chairperson Shashank Desai.

It could not be ascertained whether the signatories will muster the magic figure of seven votes to dislodge the vice-Chairperson given that the no trust motion is signed by only four Councilors.
