Social Welfare Minister Pandurang Madkaikar has said there are about 350 deaf students in Goa, but there are insufficient teachers to teach them.
He was addressing a function organised by Rotary Parivar in association with Sanjay Centre for Special Education and Goa Entertainment Association in Porvorim to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day.
Madkaikar commended Sanjay Centre for starting a diploma in education course to train teachers.
“The government has notified 21 types of disabilities, of which deafness is one. According to information with the government, there are about 350 deaf students in Goa, but there are insufficient teachers to teach them,” he informed.
“Sanjay Centre should train its students in such a way that when they become teachers, they are in a position to teach students with different disabilities,” said Madkaikar.
Stating that special children need special attention, Madkaikar said it is the duty of all segments in society to look after their welfare. “These special children require love and affection, not sympathy. Teachers should first behave like parents with the special children and then perform their duties as teacher,” said Madkaikar.
Rotary Club President Dr Jason Fernandes that the government should stress on inclusive education so that these special children also get equal attention.
“These special children possess some skills which should be unearthed and programmes should be devised for them so that when they grow old they should be able to earn their livelihood and stand on their own feet,’ said Dr Fernandes.
During the event, students who excelled in various competition were awarded certificates of appreciation from the guests.
Marushka Miranda enlightened the gathering about Down’s Syndrome.
President of Sanjay Centre for Special Education Guruprasad Pawaskar and Gaurish Dhond also spoke at the function.
