Davorlim villagers are bracing up for a battle against the government's move to shift 11 Margao-based schools on the government-acquired Communidade land, with villagers demanding that the acquired land be left for the villagers and should be utilized for village infrastructure instead of catering to the city schools.
The issue figured prominently at the feast of the Holy Cross church situated inside the acquired land with Davorlim Chaplain Fr Domnick Norohna asked the villagers to pray to God for the enlightenment of the government to leave the land for the village good.
"News that 11 schools from Margao will be shifted to Davorlim on the acquired land has thrown up a host of questions. Communidade means village community and the people. This land was reserved for the betterment of the villagers. How the government has acquired the land, whether the government had taken consent of the villagers. We are not blaming anyone, but we need answers as we can save the acquired land for the villagers'," Fr Norohna said.
Addressing the parishioners after the celebration of the Holy Cross feast, Fr Norohna further said hat the acquired land ought to have been utilized to meet the requirements of Davorlim villagers. This is the only land of Davorlim Communiade. Projects should have come for the benefit of the village, By bringing schools here on the acquired land, how will the authorities meet the infrastructural needs of the village", he questioned.
While demanding to know whether the government is trying to bulldoze its way with the education hub given that the local populace comprises of the Scheduled tribes, Fr Norohna demanded to know whether the village will benefit in any way with this project in terms of employment. Former Sarpanch Paulo Colaco said it is unfair to shift schools when the infrastructural needs of the villagers have still not been fulfilled.
