There's good news in store for Goa's lone wholesale fish market - the symbol of mess and stench in Margao, the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) on Thursday finally decided to build a state-of-the-art wholesale fish market with modern amenities, such as a cold storage, offices et at Madel.
The PDA meeting chaired by SGPDA Chairperson Dr Renuka Da Silva and attended by MLAs Digambar Kamat and Ravi Naik, besides MMC Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai and others have given the green signal for the wholesale fish market proposal, which is estimated to cost Rs 20-25 crore.
While the PDA will take up the project departmentally as against the decision of the previous body to hand over the land to the Fisheries department, the PDA will seek funds from the government to execute the multi-crore project.
PDA Member Secretary Ashok Kumar said a number of amenities have been mooted in the wholesale fish market project, including concretisation of the entire floor to rid the market of the much and stench.
"The project has many facilities, including a
Effluent Treatment plant, platforms, offices for the fish merchants and other amenities," he added.
Meanwhile, the SGPDA has resolved to seek the help of L K S Consultants to make a thorough study of the Old market area of the city for the restoration of the heritage structures lining on the old market-Holy Spirit Church road.
The decision assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the inspection carried out of the old market area, including the crumbling Camara de Salcete building, by the Spanish representative of L K Consultants along with TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai earlier this week.
In the meantime, the senior PWD officials made a presentation before the PDA members on the traffic and transportation plan for Ponda town.
