Japanese tourist case: Tourism Min rewards Goa Police Rs 50,000

Goa Police on Wednesday received a pat on the back from Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte and also earned a reward of Rs 50,000 for the breakthrough they achieved in the assault and cheating case of the Japanese tourist.
“If tourists get immediate relief and justice from the police, then a message will go that Goa is a safe tourist destination. We appreciate the performance of the police in this case. I appreciate the efforts of the Superintendent of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Anjuna Police for giving justice to the Japanese tourist. I announce a reward of Rs 50,000 to the entire investigation team,” Khaunte said.
The Tourism Minister visited the Mapusa Police sub-division and met Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar and Anjuna PI Prashal Dessai.
Khaunte said that soon after the incident involving the Japanese tourist, the Consulate General of Japan in Mumbai had issued an advisory to its citizens to move with caution while travelling to Goa, especially in Anjuna.
He said although no complaint was officially registered, police acted on the tweet of the Japanese tourist and tracked down the accused within days, which was a commendable effort.
“As Goa is a tourist destination, it is our duty to give tourists a sense of security. The police did a fantastic job and to zero on the accused in quick time,” he said.
He said the accused were not from Goa but yet police managed to investigate and dispatch teams to various locations out of the State to track and apprehend the accused.
“We need to encourage our police when they do a good job,” Khaunte said.
The Japanese tourist, Tatsuki Teramoto, in a tweet had said that some unknown persons impersonating as Police Officers restrained him and committed theft of his credit and debit cards, IPhone, Indian currency of Rs 30,000 and Japanese currency of 1,50,000 Yen, when he was in Goa.
He further said that the accused persons used his credit and debit cards at various stores cheating him of Rs 10,000.
Treating the tweet as a complaint, Anjuna Police registered an FIR under Sections 419, 392 R/w 34 IPC against unknown persons.
