Jeweller booked for allegedly melting pledged gold

VASCO

Mormugao Police have registered a case against a jeweller from Headland Sada for allegedly refusing to return gold ornaments pledged for a loan and claiming that the ornaments had been melted, causing a major loss to the complainant.

According to a complaint filed by Mahendra Mukund Kushnaji of Vasco, he had pledged gold ornaments weighing 116 grams (net weight) with Bhimappa Chalwadi of PBC Jewellers near Siddaruth Math, Headland Sada, on October 23, 2025, in exchange for a gold loan of Rs 7 lakh.

The complainant stated that he regularly paid the monthly interest of Rs 4,600 for eight months. However, when he approached the jeweller to repay the full loan amount along with the outstanding interest and redeem his ornaments, the accused allegedly refused to accept the payment and did not return the pledged jewellery.

The complaint further stated that the accused told him the gold ornaments had already been melted. The complainant alleged that this amounted to a breach of trust, causing him wrongful loss while giving the accused wrongful gain.

Based on the complaint, Mormugao Police have registered an offence under Sections 316(5) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Saidatta Naik of Mormugao Police Station under the supervision of Police Inspector Sheriff Jacques and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
