Water supply from the JICA Selaulim pipeline was restricted in parts of South Goa on Tuesday evening after the welding on the main joint of the line gave way at Devlamoll-Malcornem in Quepem.
The incident occurred at around noon when the welding on the manhole of the 1400 dia mm pipeline gave way, resulting in water gushing out through the joint.
PWD Executive Engineer, Anant Gaonkar told The Goan from the site that work is underway at the site to restore water supply at the earliest. He said teams of workers were on the job to drain out of the water to facilitate the welding work. “The pipeline is not damaged or ruptured. Only the welding at the joint has given way. The pipeline is intact”, Gaonkar said.
To a query, the Executive engineer said that the welding work is expected to be complete later tonight, exuding confidence that water supply through the line will be restored to South Goa from Wednesday morning. “Water should reach Margao by Wednesday as we expect the work to be complete by late tonight”, Gaonkar said.
PWD Assistant Engineer, Vijay Kudchadkar told The Goan that there would be restricted supply of water to Madgavkars on Wednesday. He, however, pointed out that the PWD has stored enough water in the Master Balancing Reservoir, which would be supplied to the people of Margao in a restricted manner.
