In a bid to find a solution to the acute parking problem and traffic woes plaguing the heart of Navelim village, especially in and around the schools, the authorities have mulled a host of measures, including issuing a notification to ban vehicular parking on the roads heading to the educational institutions.
A joint meeting convened by Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro saw District Collector Agnelo Fernandes, PWD and traffic authorities, besides the heads of the educational institutions, including Principal of Rosary Church Fr Simon Diniz, participated in the deliberations in an effort to find out a solution.
Faleiro along with the officials held meetings with the Sisters of Perpetual Convent High School and virtually pleaded with them to open the gates behind the school for the benefit of the students coming from the villages of Colmorod, Aquem-Baixo and Davorlim. The Navelim MLA tried to impress upon the management of Perpetual Succor school on the need to open the gates of the school so that students from Colmorod, Aquem Baixo and Davorlim need not cross the Church road to come to the school.
While the Perpetual Convent HS had initial reservations about the proposal, saying opening of the gates may throw up questions of security of the school complex, Faleiro tried to reassure the sisters that the gates may be opened up only during the peak school hours, saying the measure is being adopted with residents of Dongorim complaining of traffic snarls on the Dongorim road because of the parking opposite the school.
On the other hand, Rosary College Principal Fr Simon Diniz suggested to the authorities to start challaning traffic violators, especially those who park their vehicles on the road heading to Sinquetim. After much discussion, the District Collector Agnelo said the authorities will notify the stretch of road, around 100 meters distance, as no parking zones to facilitate the traffic cell to challan the traffic violators.
Faleiro later told the media that the heart of Navelim village is facing acute parking and traffic problems with the rise in the student community studying in the educational complexes. “Today, Navelim has become an educational hub. Around 10,000 students are studying in Navelim’s educational institutions. This has thrown up several problems, including traffic and parking,” he said, while announcing a slew of measures to overcome the problems.
While the Collector will issue the no-parking notification, railings will come up along the roads near the junction to prevent students from crossing the roads. Faleiro said the PWD has been told to reopen the subway and illuminate the same.
