Junta House demolition faces traffic and safety hurdles

PANAJI

The Goa government’s plan to demolish iconic six-storey Junta House in Panaji faces logistical challenges, with authorities seeking to ensure safety without disrupting the city’s busiest commercial district.

Officials are assessing the need to cordon off the area, which could affect traffic on 18th June Road, the capital’s principal commercial artery, known for heavy vehicular and pedestrian movement.

The surrounding area houses shops, offices, banks, restaurants, Hotel Fidalgo and other business establishments. Authorities are examining ways to minimise disruption to commercial activity and public movement.

Work gathers pace

An official said NBCC (India) Ltd, the Central government-owned Navratna enterprise entrusted with redevelopment, had taken possession of the 1966-built building and its land. A Pune-based contractor has reportedly been engaged for demolition, and heavy machinery has reached the site.

Redevelopment plan

Junta House recently completed 60 years and remains one of Panaji’s most recognisable landmarks, having dominated the city’s skyline for decades. The proposed 14-storey complex includes a luxury hotel, casino floors and a rooftop swimming pool, triggering opposition from civil society groups and political representatives.

Questions unanswered

At Tuesday’s Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) meeting, held after four months, councillor Jack Sukhija sought clarification on the impending demolition. Mayor Rohit Monserrate and Commissioner Klen Madeira did not respond.

Sukhija, retired former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court Ferdino Rebello and members of the citizens’ movement ‘Enough is Enough’ have criticised the proposal, particularly reports of space being earmarked for a casino.

Heritage concerns

Rebello and his group have described the project as an attack on Panaji’s heritage and civic character. Panjimites Against Casinos has warned that replacing a prominent public landmark with a casino-linked development would compromise the city’s identity and prioritise commercial interests over public good.

Norms relaxed

The State Cabinet has approved building-norm relaxations, including enhanced stilt height to accommodate a three-level puzzle parking system. With demolition preparations advancing, authorities must find a way to safely bring down the landmark without paralysing Panaji’s commercial heart.
