Activists, women and like-minded individuals held a candle light march at Old Goa, on Sunday, demanding justice for late Siddhi Naik even as speakers alleged that the case was deliberately botched from the start.
After the march, the people gathered at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi where various speakers lambasted the government departments for botching up the investigation.
Speaking on the occasion, Aishwarya Salgaonkar alleged that the Calangute police botched up the case initially by ruling it a case of drowning and later the doctor who did the post mortem by not doing it properly. “The viscera was not preserved, the clothes of the victim have not been found and now blame game has started between the doctors and the police,” Salgaonkar opined while demanding that the doctor who conducted the post-mortem should be immediately suspended.
Aruna Wagh said that there is total collapse of law and order in the State, and women are not safe anymore.
“Atrocities against women are rising by the passing day and Goa is becoming like Delhi,” Wagh alleged.
Wagh also came down heavily of attempts made to malign the victim. “The name of the victim girl is being maligned. Is it because she comes from a poor family or is it because she belongs to the Bahujan Samaj or is it because she is a woman?” Wagh posed and informed that in any crime, a criminal leaves behind clues which the police need to find.
Wagh further demanded that investigation needs to be done at the workplace where the girl worked. “Why is no investigation done at the workplace? Whom are the authorities trying to save?” she questioned and demanded that the family of Siddhi Naik should be given justice by bringing the culprit to book.
Another speaker stated that the Siddhi Naik case is a clear case of rape and murder, and it has striking resemblance to the Scarlett case. “There is no doubt that it is a rape and murder case. But the Calangute police ruled it out based on the post-mortem report and hurriedly handed the body for final rites even as the father was demanding for a second post-mortem,” he informed.
“It just goes to show that the police and the toxicology department were in collusion to manipulate the case,” the speaker stated while demanding that the government should ensure thorough investigation in the matter so that the late Siddhi Naik gets justice.
