K’taka authorities, activists flay Vijai

BELAGAVI

Karnataka authorities have categorically denied allegations by Goa Forward MLA Vijai Sardesai regarding the fresh works being carried out at the controversial Kalasa water diversion site near Kankumbi.

Activists in Karnataka have also denied such charges and stated that any such allegations should be brought to the notice of the authorities at the Centre instead of raising baseless allegations.

Speaking to The Goan, S Amminbhavi, Chief Engineer of Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd, Malaprabha Project Zone, denied any such development.

“No such work is being carried out in the Mhadei basin nor at the proposed Kalasa-Bhandura water diversion site. However, the state authorities may be contacted for any such clarification,” Amminbhavi said, clarifying the allegations.

He also suggested that the government authorities could ascertain the fact.

Meanwhile, Kannada activists have also reacted strongly to the frequent visits and inspections by Goan leaders.

“GFP president Vijay Sirdesai’s concerns are baseless. Karnataka is prepared to divert the Mhadei water as per the award of the Panchal Tribunal. Supreme Court also has cleared decks in this regard on February 20, 2019,” Ashok Chandargi, president of Belagavi district Kannada organisations and Kalasa-Bhandura action committee, said.

“Accordingly, the Union Ministry for Water Resources published the award on February 27, 2019. However, Goan leaders are unnecessarily raising objections now and then.”

“It would be appropriate if Goan authorities could approach the Centre instead of issuing public statements to please its people. Karnataka is fully prepared to use its share in the Mhadei basin as per the award without damaging forest land or causing harm to the ecological balance in the border area,” Chandargi added.
