BELAGAVI

Goans are being advised to avoid Belagavi unless it is necessary or in cases of emergency, as the once bustling city is virtually in lockdown with the closure of malls, gyms and places of public gatherings in a concerted attempt to prevent the spread of the dreaded coronavirus.

The Belagavi district administration has initiated stringent measures, which have also included check posts to scan people arriving from Goa and Maharashtra.

At a meeting in the Zilla Panchayat Hall on Tuesday evening, Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Dr S B Bomanhalli urged religious heads to avoid gathering at religious places like churches, mosques, mandirs, etc till March 31 and if required a few days beyond.

Stating that no case of Covid-19 has been reported in the district so far, Dr Bomanhalli said: “Since Monday, special check posts have been set up at Kankumbi, Londa and other border entry spots for checking people coming to Belagavi from Goa and Maharashtra,” Dr Bomanhalli said.

He also urged people to strictly follow directives of health authorities in view of prevention of getting infected by the

coronavirus.

“I have held meetings with almost every association and urged their cooperation with respect to the present situation,” he said.

Meanwhile, all jatras, festivals and other public celebrations in Belagavi region have been either cancelled or postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus threat.

All schools and colleges in the region will remain shut down till March 31 while the primary schools have been already declared summer holidays. Even street hawkers have been strictly banned from selling

street food, etc.

ZP CEO Dr Rajendra K V also urged people to extend their cooperation in the situation and support the district administration in preventing infection if Covid-19.

“Maintain safe social distance while interacting with each other,” he

 appealed.
