MARGAO
Chief Officer Y B Tawde, who was confronted by a group of people right in the municipal corridor, excused himself from discussing the issue on the plea he has to attend a meeting in the Secretariat, but promised to discuss in detail the issue with the group on Friday morning.
Fr Maverick Fernandes, convenor of the Council for Social Justice and Peace, Fr Savio Fernandes, petitioner before the National Minority commission, Abdulmatin Carol, city“based lawyer, Adv Rajiv Gomes and others had come to discuss the issue with the Chief Officer with an appointment.
But, Tawde maintained that he did not give any appointment to anyone for a meeting on Thursday morning, before agreeing to have a dialogue with the group on Friday morning
Fr Maverick told the MMC CO that the issue has been pending for a long time now, adding that he also want to present his views on the issue.
Adv Rajiv Gomes later told the media that the political class has only fooled the Muslim community with false promises, demanding to know why the kabrastan has not taken shape till date at Sonsodo when the Municipality had inked an agreement with the Jama Masjid, Malbhat in November, 2011.
“Is it not a surprise that when the MMC rushed to ink an agreement with the Muslim community on the eve of the 2012 Assembly elections, but did nothing to build the burial grounds at the site for the last five years. They are blaming citizens like me for raising these public issues, but let me tell you that these politicians raise their heads like frogs during the monsoons,” Adv Gomes said.
He demanded that the Civic body place before the people of Margao in general and the Muslim community in particular the steps initiated by the Municipality on the kabrastan grounds issue.
