A tourist from Karnataka was found under suspicious circumstances inside a 'rent-a-cab' car at a parking lot in Calangute on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Shanmukha Shivputra Bhavimani (41) of Raichur-Karnataka.
According to reports, the incident came to light around 1.30 pm when staff collecting parking fees at the site noticed a person lying unconscious on the back seat of the rental car. They contacted the police control room to report the matter.
On receiving information, a Calangute police team went to the scene and found the individual already dead. The police conducted a panchnama and sent the body to Goa Medical College (GMC) for a post-mortem examination.
Forensic experts and a dog squad were also summoned to the scene. Preliminary investigation showed no visible signs of injury on the body. However, liquor bottles were found inside the vehicle, leading police to suspect that the death may have occurred after the deceased fell asleep in the car while under the influence of alcohol. The exact cause of death will be revealed following the post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Bhavimani had arrived in Goa for a holiday with a male and female friends on Saturday. After staying in Goa for two days, his friends had returned to their hometown on Monday. The deceased was staying in Calangute, as he was reported planning to stay there for two days. These tourists had rented a car on Saturday itself.
Further investigation is being conducted by Inspector Lakshie Amonkar and Sub-Inspector Paresh Sinari under the guidance of Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishvesh Karpe.
