The panchayat has taken action against 18 illegal structures in the last three days.
It may be recalled that the Block Development Officer Prasiddh Naik along with the panchayat members on July 12 inspected the controversial scrap yards and rented rooms in Ward 7 of Kavale Panchayat in Dhavali and directed the panchayat to serve notices.
About 60 rented rooms were constructed illegally in this area, while scrap yards are also running illegally.
Speaking to The Goan, Kavale Sarpanch Rajesh Kavalekar said since the last three days, they are taking action by measuring the area of illegal structures. "We are doing it phase wise. At present, we have inspected 18 structures where there are several rented rooms. Action will be taken against all as they don't posses documents," he said.
"A property owner had taken house number in 1990 and using it, he constructed many rooms and gave it on rent. The panchayat is not gaining anything from that," Kavalekar justified his action.
Since last many years these scrap yards are doing business illegally, but the authorities had not taken any action against them. The BDO had directed the panchayat secretary to take action under Section 66 and 66 (3) (4) of Panchayat Raj Act 1994.
During the inspection, it was noticed that no toilet facilities were provided to the rented rooms. "Upon enquiry, they told that defecation is done in open areas. We will definitely take action against them," Kavalekar said.
