Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavalekar withdrew his private member's resolution seeking that the government provide morgue facilities in all the full-fledged primary health centres.
Kavalekar had moved a resolution seeking that the "government provide morgue facilities in all the full-fledged primary health centres so as to ease the burden on existing morgue facilities at Goa Medical College, Bambolim and Hospicio Hospital, Margao and also for the convenience of people from rural areas and families of the deceased persons."
Kavalekar said that in the absence of such facilities relatives of the deceased who are already distressed on account of the loss of a loved one now have to undergo the hassle of having to locate a morgue to help preserve the body until the last rites can be held.
"I'm not saying that the government set up morgues at every primary health centre, but at least at the major ones the government should ensure that they are geographically distributed," Kavalekar said.
His sentiments were echoed by several members of the house who expressed similar concerns.
In reply, the health minister said that the government had a plan in place to ensure that the facilities would be upgraded and streamlined.
In view of the assurance given by the Health minister, the leader of opposition withdrew his resolution.
Kavalekar also withdrew his resolution on seeking "occupant I" status be granted to those persons who have been rehabilitated to make way for the Selaulim dam.
Kavalekar had moved a resolution stating that the government allay the sufferings of the people affected by Selaulim Dam Rehabilitation by ensuring that the allocated area of 10,000 sq mts for agricultural purpose and area of 400 sq mts for housing purpose be given to all 643 sufferers in said designated area to be transferred from Occupant class - II to Occupant class - I such that all affected have ownership rights which was promised and is being denied for so long.
His demand was echoed by several legislators including Pratapsing Rane, Deepak Prabhu Pauskar and other members of the House.
