Kavlekar hits out at Cong over MP crisis

After himself dealing a body blow to the Congress with his surprise defection to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while he was the Leader of the Opposition in July last year, Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar on Thursday took pot-shots at his former party in the wake of the exit of Jyotiraditya Scindia saying his former party needs to do a “chintan” to figure out the reasons for such debacles.

Kavlekar said, it seems the Congress has failed to learn lessons from past desertions by leaders, making a feigned reference to his own crossing of aisles at the head of a 10-member legislators group in July last year.

“See, it is happening everywhere. We had done the same thing some months back. We do not see a proper future in the party, where senior leaders seem to do what they want. They do not take people into confidence,” the deputy chief minister said while speaking to the media.

Coming in the midst of the ongoing election process, the Scindia exit is bound to have a negative impact on the prospects of the Congress at the March 22 ZP hustings, Kavlekar said, adding that there could be a greater exodus with more leaders quitting in the coming days.

Kavlekar said the leadership has to rectify its functioning and understand the desertions.

Pointing out that Madhya Pradesh will eventually be netted by the BJP like Karnataka already is, Kavlekar claimed that is not that the BJP is overthrowing the Congress governments.

“It is happening on its own,” said the deputy chief minister who has served multiple terms as legislator in the Congress before deserting the party in July last year.
