At a function held at Manipal Hospital, Dona Paula, consultant nephrologists at the hospital, Dr Amol Mahaldar said that 60 percent of the diabetes cases led to kidney diseases and a cause for concern since Goa has over 17 percent of the population suffering from diabetic.
“Patients suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes are at a higher risk of getting kidney diseases. Being overweight also increases the risk of getting diseases of the kidney. Patients with kidney diseases cannot be cured but can only be controlled and not completely treated,” he said.
In the state there are over a thousand of patients undergoing dialysis and over 200 requiring transplants. This number, he said, will only be increasing.
He added that chances of survival for patients on dialysis were only 30 percent but that of a transplant would increase the chances of patient survival by about 75 to 80 percent.
Goa was also at a risk of more cases of kidney stones due to diets that include shellfish, prawns and cholesterol rich cashew nuts.
Speaking at the occasion, nephrologists Dr Madhav Sazgiri said patients with a history of kidney stones should drink enough of water, take metabolic
profile tests and stay away from shellfish, prawns, red meat, pork, cashews and excess milk products.
