Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Chaya Komarpant resigned on Tuesday to pave way for the next woman councillor to occupy the top post in the council, which is reserved for women councillors.
According to sources, Komarpant along with CMC Dy Chairperson Shamsunder Desai and a few other councillors from the ruling group went to Panaji and she submitted her resignation to the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA).
“Yes, I personally submitted my resignation to the DMA at Panaji on Tuesday,” said Komarpant, when asked to confirm the development.
Komarpant’s resignation finally settled growing speculations of uncertainty over her resignation, after she had failed to resign on the agreed date.
To another query, Komarpant said she had no inclination if there was any threat regarding the smooth transfer of the chairperson’s post to Nitu Dessai, as agreed with Chief minister Manohar Parrikar about nine months ago.
There have been speculations that a former chairperson who is a current councillor plans a comeback and is reportedly trying to woo a few other councillors into her group.
Bhagatwada Councillor Nitu Desai is the fourth and the last woman councillor in the present council, who is expected to be sworn in unopposed as CMC chairperson.
