Konkani stage artiste, comedian Flavia Barretto is the new Sarpanch of the village Panchayat of Varca.

In the elections held on Tuesday, Flavia was elected unopposed after the presiding officer received her lone nomination paper for the vacant post.

Election for the post was necessitated following the resignation of outgoing Sarpanch Salesiana Fernandes.

After the presiding officer declared her elected unopposed, the award winning comedian said she would work with the panchayat members to usher development of the village. In fact, she said attempts would be made to resolve the garbage issue facing the village by starting wet waste collection.

“Varca village is facing the garbage issue. The Panchayat had stared clearing of roadside gabrage. We will resume the exercise again. The panchayat will also start the exercise of collecting wet waste”, she said.

Promising to usher in the development of the village with the help of the Panchayat members, the new Sarpanch said the Panchayat will take up work on the footbridge at Pedda and take up reconstruction of the village bus stops which are in bad shape. 

She thanked the Almighty and the panel of members who had got her elected to the post unopposed, even as she thanked the people of her ward for electing her as a ward member. 

“Today, I am occupying the post of Sarpanch because people of my ward elected me”, she said, while promising to work for the people of the village.
