Inmates of a lorry bearing a Karnataka registration number plate were caught clandestinely disposing off garbage at Sonsodo in the afternoon on Wednesday.
While the inmates of the lorry claimed the garbage originated from a party which was held at a South Goa based resort, locals claimed that they had witnessed the garbage which was being emptied between 1.30 and 2 pm on Wednesday.
Speaking to mediapersons, Raia resident Peter Carvalho claimed that the lorry was stopped by him in the course of the disposal of garbage by the roadside at Sonsodo and the inmates were immediately directed to clean the area. Carvalho said the garbage which was being disposed comprised boxes, flowers, etc.
“The inmates of the lorry told us that they had collected the garbage after the party and were on their way to Karnataka to dispose off the garbage,” Carvalho said, quoting the suspects.
He told mediapersons that police were alerted on the sidelines of this incident and that the suspects will have to be booked under the relevant sections of the Non Bio-degradable Act and penalised.
“Our village is not a dumping ground and we will not be mere spectators to such incidents. It is our duty to adhere to cleanliness and enforce the same,” Carvalho remarked.
