Labour and Employment Commissioner Levinson Martins has directed the Assistant Labour Commissioner (Mapusa) to expedite the into a Labour Inspector regarding the fake challans scam.
The Goan, in its report on June 25, stated that the department will reopen the case, which was nearly closed after the inspector’s ‘punishment transfer’ about four years ago.
“I have instructed the ALC to investigate the matter and submit the findings to me promptly,” Martins, who recently assumed the role of Commissioner, informed The Goan.
Following initial allegations against him, the former Commissioner had relocated the inspector from Pernem to headquarters. However, the inspector subsequently secured a favourable posting in Bardez.
Simultaneously, the department has initiated scrutiny of previous allegations of corruption against the inspector.
The recent scam emerged shortly after COVID-19 forced government services online.
Allegedly, a citizen’s service centre under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued fake receipts to shop owners in Pernem, inflating registration fees.
The department will also investigate whether shop owners outside Pernem were similarly affected by the alleged scam.
Two female operators, who pleaded with the department not to take action against them, were questioned regarding their suspected involvement.
