Earlier in the day, protestors from Mirabag, including a large number of women, staged a dharna at Lohia Maidan. Accompanied by environmental activist Abhijit Prabhudesai, they were met by a large police presence at the venue.

When the protesters used a sound system to raise slogans as part of their protest, the police, led by Margao PI Arun Desai along with an executive magistrate, asked whether they had the required permission from the Margao Municipal Council to use the ground for the protest.

Meanwhile, the police called in additional personnel from neighbouring police stations as a precaution. Sub-Divisional Police Officer and SP Sidhant Shirodkar also arrived at Lohia Maidan to ensure the protestors were removed from the venue due to the lack of permission.

The protesters made a last attempt to obtain permission from the Margao Municipal Council, but their application was rejected, clearing the way for the police to remove them from the ground.

However, the protesters, led by Viriato Fernandes, opted for a jail bharo agitation before they were taken in buses to the Margao Police Station waiting outside Lohia Maidan.
