Second such incident in a month prompts pipeline flushing, inquiry and residents’ concerns over water quality

Water Supply Department officials carry out pipeline flushing work in Zarme village after reports of larva-like worms in the drinking water supply.
VALPOI
Barely a month after larva-like worms were reportedly found in the water supply under the Dabos water project in the Valpoi Municipal area, a similar incident has been reported from Zarme village in the Maheoor Gram Panchayat area. The incident has raised concerns among residents and drawn criticism of the Water Supply Department.
Taking note of the matter, Poriem MLA Dr Deviya Rane directed Water Supply Department officials to conduct a detailed inquiry. Officials have also begun work to flush and clean the pipeline supplying water to the village.
WORM FOUND IN WATER
The incident came to light when a family in Zarme allegedly found a larva-like worm in water stored in a bucket. After local residents were informed, concern spread through the village and the matter was reported to the Valpoi Water Supply Department.
Officials visited the site and carried out an inspection. During the preliminary inquiry, the possibility that the worm entered through the water pipeline was considered, and further investigations are underway.
VILLAGERS RAISE CONCERNS
According to villagers, the motor at the village water tank was replaced four days ago. They alleged that proper precautions were not taken during the work. Residents also claimed they had earlier informed officials about several holes in the pipeline but that repairs were not carried out.
Following the complaint, department staff undertook flushing operations by opening the pipeline at several points and draining out accumulated dirty water. Officials said the system has been cleaned and measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence.
Dr Deviya Rane described the issue as serious and directed officials to strengthen monitoring and maintenance of the water supply system. With a second such incident reported within a month, residents have again raised concerns about the department’s maintenance and management practices.
