A lacklustre float parade in Mapusa brought to an end the four-day reign of King Momo in Goa as much less crowd than anticipated lined up to watch the Carnival float parade in town on Tuesday.
The poor public attendance could be attributed to Mahashivratri, an auspicious festival among the majority community.
Very few floats participated in the parade which was flagged off by Fintan D’Souza, former Superintendent of Police in the presence of Mapusa Municipal Council, Chief Officer, Sitaram Sawal, who is the chairman of the Mapusa Carnival Committee, councillors and officials of the civic body.
Hundreds of revellers lined up along the road from Mapusa Church leading up to the bus stand to watch the colourful floats.
However, the number of people who came to witness the parade was much less as compared to previous years.
This year the float parade coincided with Mahashivratri, one of the most auspicious festivals of the majority community in the country.
“The combined effect of the festival of Mahashivratri and Covid restrictions may have forced people to stay away from the float parade,” said one of the organisers of the Mapusa Carnival Celebration Committee.
After winding its way through the streets, the floats finally converged at the open space near the Bodgeshwar Temple.
Prizes for the floats were expected to be announced later in the night.
