MARGAO
Who will crack the whip against the leaking Margao Municipal garbage compactors, whose leachate spilling on the roads is posing a nuisance as well as a health hazard to the citizens day in and day out?

Well, this question did the rounds in the corridors of the Margao Civic Body and outside on a day when the team comprising of the Goa State Pollution Control Board and others went about sealing business establishments for want of consent to operate the business.

Leachate spillage from the garbage compactor vehicles on the city roads has now become a norm rather than an exception, causing a nuisance to the citizens.

In fact, citizens, including business establishments and motorists, complain of leachate spillage causing nuisance at the garbage collection points.

A case in point was near Old Model High School in the heart of the commercial capital. After a compactor lifted garbage from a collection point, the vehicle left behind leachate, which not only caused a nuisance but posed a risk of road accidents to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders.

Hotel owners have complained of the foul odour left behind by the garbage compactors after collecting waste from the points.

Sources in the Margao Municipality conceded that the garbage compactors have no leachate collection tanks to collect the spillage. It was also pointed out that the garbage compactors are old and have almost outlived their utility.

Saying that the MMC will soon get three new garbage compactors, a civic official stated that the new vehicles will also have a provision for leachate collection tanks.
