MARGAO: Host Maina Sports Club cruised to a 3-0 victory over Goa Velha Sports Club to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the Simon Barreto Memorial Inter-Village Football Tournament, organized by Maina Sports Club at DYSA Ground, Curtorim, on Monday.
Maina Sports Club took control from the start, scoring two goals in the first half to lead 2-0 at the break. Joywin Carneiro opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, followed by Savio Peixoto’s goal in the 20th minute.
In the second half, Goa Velha had two chances to get back into the game, but Pratik Kankonkar and Satish Kankonkar both missed opportunities. Maina Sports Club extended their lead in the 37th minute with Savio Peixoto’s second goal, completing his brace.
Goa Velha’s goalkeeper, Francisco Afonso, was exceptional, saving two one-on-one situations to prevent Maina from adding to their tally. His outstanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award for his heroic efforts in goal.
