MARGAO: Navelim Villagers Union mauled Benfica YC Vasco 5-0 in a one sided match to march into the semifinal of the Cavelossim Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim, at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim.
Navelim made their intention very clear as early as the third minute when Velliston Almeida gave a clever pass to Nash Pereira whose power packed shot sailed over the cross bar.
Navelim drew first blood when Alif Shaikh dribbled past Sameer Borkar and Stalen Lucas and back heeled the ball to Ronaldo Pereira who shot the ball in the top corner of the goal to take 1-0 lead for Navelim.
Vasco came very close to scoring when Edson Souza ran from the right flank and shot meekly towards goal which was well collected by Navelim keeper Selwin Gomes.
Crossing over, Navelim had the total upper hand with Presley Gomes scoring from a free kick beating the defensive wall to make the score 2-0.
Melliston Dias used his speed and dash from the left flank to score the third goal with a grounder.
Presley Gomes who outwitted the Vasco defence time and again pumped in two more goals in the 50th and 55th minutes to score the first hat-trick of the tournament and take Navelim in the semis.
Presley Gomes was given the Man of the Match award by sixth time Panch Member John Barreto of VP Cavelossim.
