The State government-launched Central government's Ujala scheme got a good response at Canacona on Saturday.

At a function organised at Nagorcem on Saturday, Canacona MLA and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar in the presence of opposition councillors distributed LED bulbs free of costs to the people of Canacona.

“Goa is the only State in the country to provide LED bulbs to each of the household. Over 5 lakh households will be provided with 15 lakh LED bulbs. Canacona which has 100 percent electrification will be provided with about 20,000 LED bulbs to over 6000 houses. All the streetlights in Canacona constituency will also be equipped with LED tubelights,” Tawadkar informed.

Various functions are scheduled in the days to come at all the six panchayats at Agonda, Shristhal, Gaondongrim, Cotigao, Poinguinim and Loliem-Polem.

Speaking further, Tawadkar said the Ujala scheme has added one more feather in the growing list of people-oriented governance of BJP. “Let the opposition criticise, they have a habit to criticise everything the government is doing for the betterment of the people. It is your overwhelming support that matters the most.”

Incidentally, while BJP South president Sarvanand Bhagat and block president Mahesh Naik were present, only five councillors, who belong to the opposition group of Canacona Municipal Council Nitu Desai, Hemant Naikgaonkar, Maruti Komarpant, Dayanand Pagui and Kishore Shet were present and spoke on the occasion.

Electricity department officials including executive engineer Santoshbab Lolienkar lauded the government for bring up the Ujala scheme.

Canacona Deputy Chairperson Samita Dhuri complained that no intimation to the ruling council members was given.
