Panic has gripped Camurlim village after a leopard killed a calf late on Wednesday night, raising fresh concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the area.
According to local sources, the calf, owned by a village resident, was attacked and killed by the big cat under the cover of darkness.
The incident has left villagers shaken, with many fearing for the safety of their livestock and families.
“This is not just about the loss of livestock. People are scared to step out after dark,” said a resident, reflecting the growing anxiety in the village.
Forest department officials rushed to the spot on Thursday morning to assess the situation. After inspecting the site and confirming the presence of a leopard in the vicinity, the team has set up a trap in an effort to capture the animal.
A forest official stated that such incidents are often linked to shrinking forest habitats and easy availability of prey near human settlements.
“We have deployed a team in the area and installed a trap. Residents are advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing out late at night,” the official said.
Authorities have also urged villagers to keep livestock secured and maintain vigilance, especially during night hours, to prevent further attacks.
