MARGAO
With the Fire Services and the MMC workers capping the Sonsodo fire, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Managing Director Levinson Martins has said the contractor appointed by the Corporation will start mobilizing machinery at the dump in the next few days after completing the survey.
The GWMC Managing Director, who has been directed by the High Court to coordinate with other agencies such as the MMC, GSPCB and GSUDA so that there are no unnecessary obstacles in the remediation at the Sonsodo site, said the agency will start the process no sooner the contractor completes the survey and sets up the machinery at the site.
The HC has on Friday issued directions that the work on remediation at the Sonsodo dumpsite proceeds immediately and in any case, not later than December 15.
“We have put the Thursday’s fire incident at Sonsodo behind us. The GWMC is bracing up to start the remediation immediately. The contractor engaged by the Corporation will complete the survey and mobilize the machinery,” Martins added.
To a question, Martins said the condition of the worker, who sustained burn injuries while carrying out survey of the Sonsodo dump with a GPS location rod, which came in contact with the 33- KV overhead line, is stable.
Sonsodo was engulfed by fire when the worker was conducting the survey for the contractor to ascertain the quantum of legacy dump.
