The Mayem Bhuvimochan Nagarik Kruti Samiti (MBNKS) has demanded that the government should expedite the process of 'liberating' Mayem village from the custody of Portuguese before January 26, 2016.

The MBNKS members have threatened to go on an indefinite agitation, if the government fails to hand over possession of Sanad to villagers before January 26.

Addressing a news conference at Bicholim on Friday evening, MBNKS president Kashinath Mayekar said the State government had been unsuccessful in handing over the possession of Sanads to the Mayem villagers, even as the process of surveying Mayem is nearing completion.

“The government had assured to hand over the possession of Sanads by December 19.”

He also claimed that the government should have taken possession of custodian property from the custody of Portuguese and handed it over to the Mayem villagers.

“The government has not undertaken this procedure so far,” added Mayekar.

He said land like Karbhat, Kawlyache Raan, Khazanbhat and Sinquerim was taken over by the Portuguese from comunidade authorities for the purpose of using it under auction. However, the government has not taken any initiative to take it back into its custody.

He called upon the government to take the land back the land into its custody so that it can be handed over to the comunidade. He also requested the north Goa Collector to conduct proper study of newly-drafted act and execute it before January 26.

He has requested Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and local MLA Anant Shet to treat the issue seriously on a priority basis.

Another local, Harishchandra Chari, said the government should also count areas like hilly region, open spaces, playgrounds, crematoriums and religious places, while conducting the survey.

Secretary Sakharam Pednekar said though entire Goa is enjoying liberation, Mayem village is the only village where villagers are still under the rule of Portuguese. He demanded to execute the procedure as early as possible without testing the patience of Mayem villagers.

Yeshwant Karbhatwkar, Anand Volvoikar, Damodar Malwankar and Dayanand Ghatwal were present for the news conference.
