Drishti lifeguards on Sunday saved 15 people from drowning on beaches in North and south Goa.
Nine of the 15 rescued were Russian visitors to the state. In the south, the lifeguards rescued two people in Zalor and one each in Colva and Agonda, a press released states.
Baga saw five rescues, while four people were rescued in Arambol and one each in Mandrem and Candolim. In the Mandrem incident, one person is reported missing.
On Mandrem beach, six people were in the water when an alarm was raised about a person in distress. The lifeguards on duty responded to the call and immediately rushed to the spot along with the rescue board.
The victim, a lady, was secured with the help of the rescue board and brought safely to the shore. The victim informed the lifeguards that her brother was also drawn into the deep. A search operation was launched on jetskis. However, all efforts to trace the victim were futile.
Police have been intimated of the incident. The vitals of the lady rescued were checked and she was handed over to her family.
Of the 15 persons rescued, nine were male tourists while one was a female.
The press release states that sea conditions were extremely rough with high waves and strong undercurrents. Red flags have been posted across all beaches under Drishti’s surveillance indicating that these are strictly non-swim zones.
Drishti has advised visitors to the beach not to venture into the water.
