MARGAO
The Benaulim beach played host to a stranger on early Wednesday “ the carcass of a sea turtle, which was washed ashore in the morning.
As the carcass posed a nuisance to the visitors, including tourists on an early morning stroll on the beach, which has been acclaimed as Asia’s third best beach, local fishermen and water sports operators moved in quickly to remove and dispose of the nuisance. The carcass was later disposed of in a pit dug up on the landward side of the beach.
Fisherman Pele Fernandes, who also runs water sports operations at Benaulim beach, informed that he and his staff saw to it that the carcass was removed from the shore and disposed of in a pit.
“We did not wait for the beach cleaning party to report for duties and clear the carcass. For, many visitors take to the beach during morning hours for a stroll and hence would not wait for the government beach cleaning workers to come and lift away the carcass,” he said.
He added: “In the past too, the local fishermen had volunteered their services to keep the Benaulim beach clean. This beach is God’s gift for the fishermen and the villagers. It is also our responsibility to keep the beach clean. That’s the reason why Benaulim has earned the name of Asia’s best beach.”
