MMC submits timeline to address Sonsodo issues after HC directive

Upon directions of the High Court, the Margao Municipal Council on Wednesday submitted a timeline on how the civic body proposes to address issues plaguing Sonsodo waste management, including the shifting and remediation of the piled-up waste inside the shed, treatment of the daily waste through windrow method, setting up of power transformer, fire fighting mechanism at the dumping site et al.

The civic body is also believed to have submitted the time frame for the completion of ongoing work on the leachate tank and other issues.

The council submitted that it has prepared an estimate amounting to Rs 2.03 crore for remediation and disposal of the existing legacy wet waste. In this respect, the MMC submitted the timeline, right from the time the estimate is submitted to GSUDA for Technical Sanction and approaching the government to accord sanction to utilize the 14th Finance Commission grants.

The council has stated it expects to commence work on the project by the third week of May and complete the entire process of remediation and disposal of the waste by the last week of September this year.

The MMC also submitted a detailed timeline on the execution of the work on the construction of a concrete platform on the western side of the MSW shed for windrow composting at Sonsodo, repair and construction of eastern side plinth wall and construction of drainage system with a platform for windrow composting at Sonsodo, construction of a platform to carry out windrow composting on the western side of the MSW shed at Sonsodo site, construction of retaining wall on the western side boundary of the Sonsodo site, construction of shed over the composting platform, construction and extension of MRF shed for dry waste sorting at MSW site, besides construction of shed over the concrete platform on the western side of the MSW shed.

Work on these projects is expected to start in the first week of May and is likely to be completed before July 2023.

Sources informed that the Margao municipality has submitted a timeframe to put the power transformer and electrical gadgets, which were destroyed in the fire, in place.

A timeline was also submitted to the High Court on the question of putting the fire fighting mechanism in place, including setting up fire extinguishers and repairs to the hose and the water tank within a month.
