Opposing a plan to construct a “structure” in the middle of the Calangute-Baga junction, residents of Calangute have said that instead of streamlining the traffic, the structure will only add to the chaos and make the spot accident prone.

Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins, however, said the focus was to redesign the circle for smooth movement of traffic. Several residents of the coastal village in a written appeal to the sarpanch said that they were shocked to observe excavation work being carried out at Umtavaddo on the main road at the Calangute-Baga junction.

“Presuming that a structure will be erected at the spot, the same will result in traffic accidents and loss of life in addition the structure will aggravate the existing traffic congestion at the spot,” said Sumitra Egipsy, in an appeal that has been signed by over 150 locals.

The local residents have also suggested that instead of a structure, a four-arm lamp post be installed at the spot which will occupy minimum space and provide maximum illumination.

Inquiries have revealed that Calangute panchayat had plans to raise the statue of Portugal football star, Cristiano Ronaldo on a pedestal at the junction.  Local MLA Michael Lobo had mooted the idea of erecting life-sized statues of international football heroes at various spots in Calangute constituency to inspire Goan youth.

“We have decided to keep plans of installation of the statue on hold and to concentrate in redesigning the circle to mainly ease the movement of traffic in the area,” said Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins.

He said the PWD along with traffic police have taken up the task of realigning the junction, which is presently under test.

“There are certain norms according to which the traffic circle/traffic island is designed and in this case, the PWD and the traffic police are engaged in taking up the work forward,” he added.

The recent rape charges slapped on the Portugal football star, Christiano Ronaldo, must also be weighing on the minds of the local leaders in the village.
