The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS Pilani) for scientific disposal of wet waste generated in the municipality.

MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed that the pilot project would be operational by the year end.

“The MMC has agreed to provide 5,000 sq mtrs of land for the “Waste to Energy” demo project of BITS Pilani. The project focuses on anaerobic co-digestion of waste. A quantity of 5 tonnes of organic waste and a tonne of septic solids (approximately 10 septic tankers) per day will be taken to the project for disposal. The MMC has provided its own land at Headland Sada for this project,” said Fernandes.

He said the MMC will also provide electricity, water and labourers for the project.

“BITS Pilani will install the biogas plant to treat 5 tonnes of organic waste and one tonne of septage solids. The project has been sponsored by the Government of India under the Solid Waste Management Scheme,” said Fernandes.

“The MMC would provide segregated wet waste and at present, MMC produces around 25 tonnes of waste. Although garbage is collected in a segregated manner, it is dumped together because there is no proper disposal facility available.”

“Dry plastic waste will sent to the cement plant, while wet waste will be converted into compost once this facility is operational,” Fernandes added.

The chief officer said this project would reduce the existing load at the present dumping site.

He further stated that the MMC plans to add the capacity to 10 metric tonnes per day by installing additional tanks based on the performance of the 5 tonnes plant.

“The MMC is in the process of identifying more land to set up a scientific garbage treatment plant. The Sancoale Communidade has come forward to give its land for this purpose.”

“Our proposal for bio remediation of 80,000 cubic meter existing dump at Sada plant has been forwarded to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA). Once all these proposal are approved, things will fall in place by the end of 2019,” said Fernandes.
