The initiative was jointly organised by the CCP and Goa State Urban Development Authority (GSUDA), along with the citizens of Altinho and surrounding areas, Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncalienker, CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado, corporators as well as CCP workers.
The citizens appreciated the four-way segregation system which has been adopted with regard to garbage disposal, but in the same breath complained about non-lifting of leaf litter and garden waste for past several months.
“For past several months the leaf litter has been lying here without being lifted. There are several trees here and there is lot of leaf litter which gets generated. It is being accumulated and nobody is making any efforts to lift it,” said a local resident who participated in the drive.
Another citizen said, “What is the use of such clean-up initiatives at primary level when lifting of garden waste at secondary level does not happen?”
Another citizen grumbled, “Altinho area is not so much littered compared to other areas. Streets are comparatively cleaner. The initiative should have been taken up in other part of Panaji which needs more attention.”
Mayor Surendra Furtado has however assured to clean the City of dry waste within seven days, only if the State govt steps in
and provides CCP a dry waste dumping site.
“CCP is being blamed for not lifting the garbage. Ironically, CCP has asked and written to the government several times asking to provide a dumping site. If the government can provide us with a dump site for dry waste and mud, I can assure you within one week I will clear the entire city”, said Furtado.
Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncalienker has however suggested the Mayor that the Curca site be cleaned and the same could be used as a dump site for dry waste.
